Deputies hurt while chasing stolen truck

first_imgVAN NUYS – An officer suffered a broken leg early today when her cruiser crashed into a tree during a pursuit after swerving to avoid a car, officials said. The police car was westbound on Sherman Way, chasing a suspected stolen pickup truck, when it had to swerve to the left to avoid a car crossing Hayvenhurst Avenue. The police car then swerved to the right to avoid the center median and hit a tree, LAPD Lt. John Delvecchio said. The officer driving the car was examined at a local hospital and released, but his partner suffered a broken right leg and a head laceration in the crash, Delvecchio said. Police later arrested David Sassar and Enrique Morales, the men in the pickup truck, on suspicion of grand theft auto, officials said. The officers ran the license plate and discovered the truck had been reported stolen in Van Nuys. The pursuit began when Sassar and Morales refused to pull over for the officers. The LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is investigating the car crash to determine if the car traveling on Hayvenhurst Avenue committed any violations. “If you see any emergency vehicle, whether a fire truck, ambulance, or a police car with red lights, you’re supposed to pull over to the right and allow them the right of way,” Delvecchio said. — Josh Kleinbaum, (818) 546-3669 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
