North Korea frees 3 US detainees Trump

first_imgDonald TrumpNorth Korea has freed three American detainees, president Donald Trump announced Wednesday, hailing a diplomatic victory ahead of a planned summit with Kim Jong Un.Pyongyang granted the three men “amnesty,” a US official said, and they are now on their way back to the United States with secretary of state Mike Pompeo. Two of the men, agricultural expert Kim Hak-song and former professor Tony Kim were arrested in 2017, while Kim Dong-chul, a South Korea-born American businessman and pastor in his 60s, was sentenced to 10 years’ hard labour in 2016.”I am pleased to inform you that secretary of state Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health,” Trump tweeted. The White House said all three men were able to walk unassisted onto a US Air Force plane that carried them and the secretary of state out of North Korea.A second plane, with more robust medical equipment, waited for them at Yokota Air Force Base, just outside Tokyo.”All indications are their health is as good as could be given they been through,” said Pompeo. The family of Tony Kim voiced their gratitude to “all of those who have worked toward and contributed to his return home” — and specifically thanking Trump for “engaging directly with North Korea.””Mostly, we thank God for Tony’s safe return,” the family said in a statement. “We ask that you continue to pray for the people of North Korea and for the release of all who are still being held.”Trump meanwhile described the release as “a gesture of good will” and said he would be on hand when Pompeo’s three “guests” land at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington at 2:00 am (0600 GMT) Thursday.Trump acolytes declared the release an unbridled political victory, evidence, vice president Mike Pence said, that “strong leadership and our America First policies are paying dividends.”The men’s release appears to pave the way for a much-anticipated summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim, scheduled to take place within weeks.- Summit details to follow -Trump says a time, date and location have been decided for that historic summit, although US officials say there are still some details to be worked out.Pompeo told reporters the administration would “in the next handful of days be able to announce date and time.”Possible locations include Singapore and the Demilitarized Zone that separates North and South Korea. The meeting will discuss North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic weapons programme, which may soon give Pyongyang the capability of striking the continental United States.Trump has demanded that North Korea give up its nukes, while Kim has offered few indications about what he is willing to concede or what he will demand in return.North Korea has often insisted that the United States withdraw support for South Korea, where 30,000-plus US military personnel are stationed.Since coming to office Trump has embarked on a campaign of “maximum pressure” on the North Korean regime.A series of provocative North Korean missile tests have been met with US sanctions and a tougher Chinese stance on cross border trade.Officials in Washington believe the punitive economic measures have prompted fuel shortages in North Korea and increased tension inside the regime.North Korea official Kim Yong Chul, who met Pompeo in Pyongyang, insisted the country’s openness to talks was “not the result of sanctions that have been imposed from outside,” but a change in regime focus.”We have perfected our nuclear capability. It is our policy to concentrate all efforts into economic progress in country,” he said.last_img read more

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Concert to Honor African Americans

first_imgFor Black History Month, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is embarking on an interactive art experience for families. The goal: to display African Americans innovation and contributions related to music through the history of United States. At the concert at 11 a.m. Feb. 21, the BSO will perform, featuring artists like Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, James P. Johnson, George Gershwin, and a choice of customary music. But the concert will include much more. According to Annemarie Guzy, the BSO’s director of education, it will be a day’s worth of events and activities for the entire family.“This concert is going to be so much fun,” Guzy said. It has so much vibrance and a lot of really interactive components. We are going to have singing from the Baltimore City College Choir, and a fantastic soprano Marquita Lister who will be singing three selections for us: two spirituals, and a song from Scott Joplin’s Opera called, Treemonisha. Then we’re also going to have some break dancers and they will be breaking to a peace called, Drums which is by African-American composer James P. Johnson who did a lot of his composing right in the middle of the Harlem Renaissance in New York.”“We’re looking at Duke Ellington for all that he did in terms of communicating with music,” Guzy said.”He really transformed the musical landscape as we know it right off with his jazz style and he’s very connected with social prejudice like James P. Johnson who really had a profound impact on him. I think it will be really fun for the audience to hear his music in this context of such and thinking of him as an innovator alongside some of our others.”If you arrive early, a pre-concert series starts at 9:45 a.m. Designed to include family members age 4 and above, there will be figures from the National Black in Wax Museum on display, as well as a break dancing workshop. You do not want to miss this groundbreaking event that will Black History alive and your family together, while celebrating the inspiring musicians and figures that helped change the future through music. “We love to have a really strong presence in the celebration of Black History Month, which is important to us here at BSO, being Baltimore-based,” Guzy said. The Family Concert portion is at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. And with online video as one of the stickiest media formats – about 80% of all Southeast Asians say they watch online video every day – many have now expanded into multiple forms of entertainment. Examples include China’s Tencent, Alibaba, iQIYI and Meituan Dianping, Korea’s Kakao, Japan’s Line (the dominant messaging service in Thailand), and Indonesia’s Go-Jek. The deal is a revenue-sharing agreement which operates on two levels in the four Southeast Asian territories where the two companies’ operations overlap: Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. (Hooq, which is backed by Singtel, Warnermedia and Sony, also operates in India.)All of Hooq’s advertising-supported (AVoD) content will be available through a widget on the Grab app’s home page. Grab users will also be offered a three-month trial of Hooq’s premium VoD services and 17 pay-TV channels. After a user’s trial has been completed, they will be able to sign up for 1-day, 7-day, or 30-day subscriptions, and see billing handled through the Grab Pay mobile wallet.“Both companies have been very flexible in defining the business model,” Hooq founder Peter Bithos said. “We have also had to work with all our content partners to get this off the ground. This is a brand-new category of rights that nobody has operated before.”The companies describe the deal as a “hockey-stick moment for both digital services and online video in (the Southeast Asia) region.” That is a reference to the non-linear growth prospects that are presented to innovative businesses in a region with a population the same size as Europe’s. Digital services are now overcoming many of the region’s geophysical barriers and socioeconomic challenges such as lack of bank accounts or credit cards. The market for subscription video in Southeast Asia is forecast to grow from $60 million in 2017 to $390 million, according to Dataxis.“We have spent four years investing in technology, content and understanding to build the leading OTT service in Southeast Asia. Now is the time to move to another level,” Bithos said. Speaking to Variety, Bithos also dropped heavy hints that Hooq is interested in expanding into Vietnam and Malaysia, two other fast-growing and populous countries where Grab is already present. But he said there is “nothing material” to report.“The Hooq partnership forms a cornerstone of Grab’s online media strategy, and will add to our strategy of becoming the everyday super-app in the region, by making our platform altogether more engaging,” said Koik. However, he did not rule out other moves into media and entertainment, such as co-production, “if the right opportunity comes along.”center_img Popular on Variety Asian video-streaming platform Hooq is to be hosted on the Grab tech and services app in Southeast Asia, following a deal between the two companies. The deal is designed to accelerate the growth of both companies beyond their core businesses.Grab was established in 2012 as a ride-hailing service in Singapore. In early 2018, Grab bought Uber’s businesses in Southeast Asia, and has since expanded into activities stretching from food delivery to payment services. Currently, it operates in eight countries and has over 130 million downloads.Like a handful of other tech companies in Asia, Grab now styles itself as a “super-app” or ecosystem, a services platform that keeps users engaged throughout their daily lives. “Adding video was an obvious next step,” Danny Koik, Grab’s head of regional partnerships told Variety. “We know that people want more services.”last_img read more
